What is a Vampire Facial

Aging is a natural process, and everybody goes through it. That doesn’t mean we have to live with these changes if we don’t have to, especially in 2021! Today, there’s a huge range of non-invasive and invasive procedures to address, stop, and even improve the signs of aging. One of the newest and most effective procedures available is the so-called “vampire facial.”

What exactly is “Vampire Facial”?

Although it’s called a facial, it’s more of a medical procedure. First, a round of micro-needling causes deliberate damage to the skin. Then, the patient’s blood is used to promote healing and collagen growth. The key lies in platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, a substance derived from the plasma of our blood. PRP contains growth factors, so it speeds up healing and stimulates new cellular growth once it’s applied as a mask to the face.

What Can It Treat?

This type of facial is good for repairing minor damage to the skin, whether they are acne scars, surgical scars, sunspots, enlarged or clogged pores, or fine lines. The stimulation of collagen and new cells can also improve overall skin health, so this procedure is useful for addressing chronic conditions like dry or dull, uneven skin.

The Procedure

First, the patient’s face will be treated with a topical numbing agent to help minimize any discomfort that may occur. Once the skin is sufficiently numbed, blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge, where it is spun until the red blood cells separate from the plasma. The resulting platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the face. The final step is micro-needling, which produces tiny, strategic punctures in the skin to help the PRP penetrate the dermis and work its magic.

Overall, the procedure lasts 45 minutes to an hour, and there is virtually no downtime. People receiving this treatment often don’t need to plan for time off of work, although there is some aftercare involved. Immediately after treatment, the skin will be tender, inflamed, and sensitive to sunlight. Therefore, people who receive this treatment should avoid using harsh products, makeup, and direct sunlight for about 5 days after the procedure.

How It Might Impact Your Life

Once healing is complete, most people notice that their skin is left brighter and firmer. Acne scars, sun spots, and fine lines are often reported to be fainter or more improved in appearance. These improvements generally increase as subsequent treatments are received.

The impacts of these types of changes are numerous. It’s an easy way to eliminate any minor insecurities you may have about having damaged or aging skin. You may notice a boost in confidence and energy, simply because you are finally putting your best face forward. This facial is also a good choice if you want to look extra fresh for a special event, such as a wedding or reunion.

Ideal Candidate

First, the ideal candidate should have realistic expectations about the facial. It can only improve minor signs of aging and skin damage. Therefore, people with sagging skin and deep wrinkles might be better served with a surgical procedure, such as a facelift.

This facial isn’t recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing, taking NSAIDS, have an active infection, or have high blood pressure. To find out if a vampire facial is the best treatment for you, you should always consult an expert who can advise you on your next steps based on your specific situation.
